| The Clark County Amateur Radio Association (CLARA) is an amateur (ham) radio club in the Springfield, Ohio area. We provide communications support to civic and public service events including runs, bicycle rides; emergency communications during hazmat incidents, fires, snow emergencies, missing child searches; weather spotter support to local officials and the National Weather Service during severe weather; and an opportunity for amateur radio operators to meet and discuss radio related topics.
Our club is more than just communications support, however. We have our annual club dinner in January, annual club picnic in June, Saturday morning breakfasts, and at least one field trip per year in lieu of a club meeting. In past years we have toured the National Weather Service facility at Wilmington, the Clark County Sheriff's dispatch center, the B-17 restoration project in Urbana, Ohio and recently WDTN Channel 2 in Dayton.
Our club meets the third Monday of each month, except for July and August, in the HOG room at Mid-Ohio Harley-Davidson.
Severe Weather Reporting
When severe weather occurs in Clark County we will initiate a special net and use a "W" courtesy tone. Please check into the net on the 146.73 repeater to report any severe weather in your area. We report it to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio.

The scenario involved an anhydrous ammonia leak occured during a delivery at a local food plant. The ammonia cloud was to drift southwest across the Clark County Fairgrounds where multiple events were taking place. The delivery driver "died" due to his exposure to the ammonia cloud and multiple folks were medically affected by the cloud as well as others that were evacuated from the area.
Amateur Radio provided communications from the incident as well as the Fairgrounds, the EOC, the Clark County Sheriff's Office, the Springfield City 911 Center and the evacuation shelter at Reid School. State officials were observing the exercise to provide feedback to the organizations participating.
Local Amateur Radio is being recognized by local disaster preparedness officials as a valuable asset. This year's scenario included a simulated failure of the 911 phone system due to the heavy call traffic. Hams were called in to pass traffic from the 911 Center to the Incident Commanders until the repairs were made.

Amateur radio operators from Clark, Greene, Madison and Montgomery
Counties supported the 18th annual Calvin's Challenge Bike Race.
The 12 hour race has two courses, a 7 mile loop and a 50 mile loop.
Amateur operators supported the 50 mile loop providing intersection and
race course safety communications.
The 50 mile loop began in Clark County at Shawnee High School, snaking
its way through Greene and Madison Counties, returning to Shawnee High
School.
The operators used the CLARA 145.31 repeater for communications
throughout the day. Members of Greene County's XWARN club provided
their mobile communications trailer for net control duties.
Clark County amateurs who supported the race included: Bob Beach,
W8LCZ, Jim Graver, KB8PSO, Joe Sheline, KD8AQH and Paul Webb,
KC8PZX.
A short video about the race can be viewed HERE.
April 4, 2009 - The 145.31 repeater is experiencing electrical interference issues on its input frequency. We may periodically have to take the repeater off the air until the cause is found and corrected. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
